Weatherdek was founded over 30 years ago in the rain laden climates of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia coast, where waterproofing plays a large part in building design. The Weatherdek walk-able PVC membranes were developed to provide home owners, builders and designers an attractive, maintenance free, alternative to the ineffective coating and waterproofing systems of the time.

Since these early days much has changed in design and manufacture of building materials, but Weatherdek membranes continue to set the standard for waterproof outdoor flooring systems.

Weatherdek is committed to producing the highest quality products available and work diligently with our Research and Development and Quality Control partners to keep abreast of the latest technologies that allow us to provide our customers with the very best materials available.

Our network of Authorized Weatherdek Dealers and Applicators has literally hundreds of years combined experience to give you the confidence your project will be completely properly and professionally, the first time.

What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a type of coating applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form.

The coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a “skin”. The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as  aluminum extrusions in architectural building materials (guard rails), automobiles and bicycle parts.

Some advantages of powder coated finishes over liquid coating include:

  • Powder coatings emit zero or near zero volatile organic compounds (VOC).
  • Powder coatings can produce much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings without running or sagging.
  • Powder coating over-spray can be recycled and thus it is possible to achieve nearly 100% use of the coating.
  • Powder coating production lines produces less hazardous waste than conventional liquid coatings.
  • Powder coated items generally have fewer appearance differences between horizontally coated surfaces and vertically coated surfaces than liquid coated items.
  • A wide range of specialty effects is easily accomplished which would be impossible to achieve with other coating processes.

Weatherdek membranes are a PVC sheet applied membrane, supplied in roll form and available in various thickness and widths. When installed the vinyl is laid out and fully adhered to most smooth substrates, all joints in the membrane are overlapped approximately 1" and heat welded, using a hot air welder, to form a fully waterproof seal. The vinyl is then mechanically fastened at the deck perimeters using a number of different details depending upon the specific application.

Deck Preparation

The recommended substrates for Weatherdek membranes are either, minimum 5/8" Select T&G Fir or G1S 3/4" Fir Plywood, or a concrete slab. In order to accept sheet vinyl these surfaces will require some preparation to ensure a smooth and uniform surface appearance once the vinyl is installed. To achieve this some sanding as well as the use of a cement or gypsum based floor levelling compound can be used.

The perimeters of the deck surface may also require some preparation and depending upon the chosen finishing detail to be used, a flashing may be required at either the outside or the inside edges of the deck.

The deck construction to which your Weatherdek will be applied plays an important roll in how your Weatherdek will look and perform throughout it's life span. The following are the manufacturers recommendations for the best performance from your Weatherdek:

  • Recommended Substrate - 5/8" Select Tongued and Grooved Fir or G1S 3/4" Fir Plywood
  • Recommended Fastening - 1 3/4" screws at a 4" to 6" spacing, as well as a quality construction grade adhesive between the plywood and joists
  • Recommended Drainage Slope - 1/8"/foot

Drainage slope on a deck is very important as improper slopes can cause water to gather and sit on the deck surface. Standing water can collect pollutants from the air or from other building materials in close proximity to the deck.

Standing water may be harmful to the appearance of your deck surface!

You have just purchased the finest VINYL sundeck waterproofing system available on today's market. It has been installed by a fully trained licensed dealer using special tools, adhesives, hardware and caulkings which have all proven to be not only highly compatible with the VINYL system but also are the best available for the job. To maximize the life of your new WEATHERDEK vinyl sundeck, here are a few simple tips on how to clean and maintain the vinyl.

  • CLEANING: You should clean the vinyl surface regularly, using a mild soap and water solution (common dish soaps are fine). If the area is particularly dirty, use a stiff bristle push broom and scrub in a circular motion. This will loosen up the dirt at the bottom of the textured pattern so it can be sprayed away with a hose. Light pressure washing of the vinyl surface is also acceptable but care should be taken when spraying near heat welded seams and sealant caulked areas.
  • WARNING: Never let vegetable matter such as leaves lay on the deck surface for long periods of time. Their stains can be very hard to remove.
  • SPECIAL: There are often situations where stronger cleaning solutions are necessary. Citrus based spray cleaners can be used on oil, grease or wet paint spills but continuous or repeated use will breakdown the top coat finish and is not covered under warranty.
  • WARNING: No matter what the solution being used to clean your Vinyl surface, it should be only briefly applied. Test it first on a piece of scrap Vinyl to be sure it will not remove the color or otherwise affect the membrane. Most importantly, flush the area thoroughly with soap and water then rinse with water only to completely remove any residue. Under no circumstances are any acids, Ketones, Turpentine, solvents or other unnamed chemicals to be used. They will affect the finish and will not be covered by the warranty.
  • INSPECTION: The only maintenance, other than the cleaning, is inspecting the caulking used to seal around posts, pillars, corners, vents and drains. Sometimes the wooden structure to which the VINYL is sealed, cracks or shifts, and the seal is broken. Yearly inspection will uncover such problems and your WEATHERDEK dealer can supply the proper caulkings to fix the problem.

Need a new Deck? Vinyl vs Wood vs Composite?

Weatherdek is a sheet vinyl membrane used to waterproof walkways, landings, decks, stairways, roof decks, pool areas, entry ways, sauna and hot tub areas, patios, etc.

Weatherdek membranes are glued to a prepared surface and heat welded at the joints. Perimeters are fastened to ensure a long lasting finish. Weatherdek eliminates the need for repainting or restaining and removes such irritants as wood splinters, nailheads and unsightly cracks. The embossed texture provides a skid resistant surface for secure footing.  Weatherdek provides the comfort of knowing any surface that it is applied to will be waterproof, thus creating dry usable space underneath.

While actual costs will vary greatly from project to project, composite decking has shown costs of 2 to 5 times more than decks built from pressure treated wood, and nearly twice as much as a deck protected with Weatherdek Vinyl. While the cost of material contributes to this difference, a lot of the extra cost is attributed to labor. The composite decking boards have less strength than regular wood and have a tendency to sag or bow, so the supporting joists must be placed closer together. Additionally, each board must be pre-drilled prior to installation during the fastening process. While waterproofing your deck with a vinyl membrane will contribute to the overall cost of the material for your decking project, the installation is handled by expertly trained installers and the vinyl can be installed and walked on within the same day. Additionally, the primary substrate of the deck is still a solid wood foundation, which protected by Weatherdek vinyl, can last for decades.

Beyond the deck surface, it is the deterioration of the wood joists underneath the composite that must be considered. The drying qualities of composite decking on the surface can be counterproductive to the actual structure of the deck. While wood decking will absorb some moisture and eventually release it to the air around it, composite decking does not absorb water. Any moisture that gets trapped underneath the composite decking and on top of the wood joists would tend to stay there and keep the joist from drying properly, making the joists more susceptible to rot and decay. Weatherdek vinyl membranes virtually eliminate the issue of wood rot. The vinyl completely seals the deck with a water-tight surface and provides roofing grade protection for the structure underneath. The water is not absorbed by the deck, but drains with a natural slope and water routers and diverters that keep the structure protected.
