Battle The Elements … And Win!

Don’t let the weather keep you from enjoying your deck. The Northlander™ Patio Covers are designed and built to withstand heavy rain, snow, sleet and harsh sunlight. A permanent canopy is great for protection from the sun’s heat and sunburn. It means you can keep your outdoor furniture, barbecue and other items protected year round without having to drag them in the house every winter.

Whatever you need for durable outdoor protection; an entryway, patio cover, enclosure, carport or Florida room, The Northlander™ has you covered. The roof is constructed from strong, aluminum pans that lock together to form a water-proof joint.

PanelCraft™ Insulated Panels

This technological marvel is made using two aluminum skins bonded to a stabilizing core material. These “sandwich” panels are incredibly strong. Use them on your patio room or as a stand alone cover for your patio. Rely on PanelCraft™ aluminum panels to provide protection from the sun, rain and snow. Enjoy outdoor gatherings or just relax in your favourite patio lounge chair on a hot summer day without worrying about the sun’s harsh effects.

PanelCraft™ aluminum roof panels provide attractive and maintenance free protection for your patio enclosure, deck or sun porch. Installed as a carport, PanelCraft™ keeps you from getting wet or tripping through snow as you get the groceries from the car to the house, as well as giving your car shelter.

PanelCraft™ polystyrene (“foam”) core panels are best of breed. They feature our unique Krystal Kote clear protective finish and a high density foam core. PanelCraft™ foam panels are built to withstand our Canadian snow loads with the engineering to prove it.

Patio Cover on Front Porch

Craft-Bilt  also manufactures PanelCraft™ panels with our exclusive honeycomb core tecnology. Honeycomb technology is found in critical applications such as airplane wings, rocket gantry platforms and the floor and roof panels of the Acura Vigor, just to name a few. Our Honeycomb panels are even stronger than our foam panels, yet only cost a small percentage more. Although they have less insulation than foam panels, many customers choose them for their Three and Four Season sun rooms. Occasionally, in some jurisdictions, obtaining a building permit is difficult with roof panels containing foam cores. Honeycomb core panels do not suffer from such building code issues.

PanelCraft™ structural insulated panels are your best choice for an insulated, maintenance-free roof system. Craft-Bilt’s laminated roof panels have been covering Canadians for over 35 years, longer than any other Canadian sunroom manufacturer.

PanelCraft™ panels come in three thicknesses: 3″, 4½” and 6″. The thicker the panel, the farther it can span and the more insulation it has. The 3″ panel takes care of most applications, however always obey your local building code.

Craft-Bilt™ also provides special foam core panels that are lined with OSB (Oriented Strand Board). These panels address particular concerns of a small percentage of building departments in Ontario.

Brings in The Natural Light While Filtering Out the Hot Sun

All framing is made from strong maintenance free aluminum. Our proprietary design, the large glazing beams used in Skyview are thoroughly tested… your assurance that your new polycarbonate roof will hold the snow. It’s a sound investment that adds value to your home.

The Northlander™ Skyview polycarbonate roof utilizes strong, multi-walled polycarbonate panels. These panels have a range of solar tints that block damaging UV rays while allowing various levels of light transmission onto your deck or into your room enclosure.

Transparent Roof for Screen Room

Our exclusive Silhouette Pearl sheet provides a solar reflection layer to reflect away the hot sun while allowing a pleasing amount of light to enter your patio room. Silhouette Pearl is also thicker than our standard sheets, to provide the extra insulation value you want for the roof of your sunroom.

Backyard Balcony Cover

Creating an atmosphere is an art form.

If you are looking for a product that creates the ultimate sunroom atmosphere, turns your patio into an oasis, gives a sense of openness and takes advantage of nature while protecting you from the elements…. then choose The Northlander™ Skyview.

Polycarbonate Roofing Has Many Uses:

  • Patio Cover: Excellent protection from rain, snow and UV rays while allowing filtered light.
  • Sunroom or and Screen Room: Prevent hot solarium syndrome, use our Silhouette Pearl solar reflective sheets.
  • Carport: An opaque or clear cover will provide shelter for your car, keep the path to your door free of snow and let light into your kitchen window.
  • Pool enclosure: The strong Skyview aluminum beams will span your swimming or lap pool.
  • Solarium or Conservatory: choose the Silhouette Pearl polycarbonate panel for its solar reflective properties combined with high insulation value.
  • Transparent Carport Canopy
  • Porch Enclosure
  • Greenhouse: Use clear panels for maximum lighting to help grow your plants.
  • Balcony Enclosure
  • covers for apartment balconies in Toronto
  • Apartment Balcony Cover Toronto
  • Commercial: As a canopy for outdoor cafe, multi-tenant balcony covers or restaurant patio cover

What Are The Features and Options of Skyview Polycarbonate Glazing?

  • Our unique Silhouette Pearl: it has a solar reflective layer for the most comfort in your sunroom and it’s 32 mm (1¼”) thick 5 wall construction provides the most insulation possible. This amazing product filters out heat but lets in pleasing amounts of light.

  • Our 16mm (⅝”) triple skinned impact resistant sheet is available in clear, bronze and opal ice. These sheets block harmful UV rays and resist weathering while transmitting diffused, natural sunlight.
  • Continuous lengths up to 24′ means that there are no purlins (cross members). Solariums with glass usually limit the glass panels to approximately 4′ lengths for structural and breakage reasons, but that results in several purlins which are points where leakage can occur.
  • 10 year polycarbonate warranty, non-prorated covering: discoloration, loss of light transmission and loss of strength due to hail damage (up to ¾” size hail). See Resources area below for full warranty information.
  • Practical alternative to glass – weighs less and the diffused light reduces heat built-up and glare.
  • High strength ribbed design.

Shading Coefficient is an indicator of how much solar radiation passes through the glazing and thus how much heat you can expect. The lower the number, the less heat build up you will have in your sunroom. U-value measures how well a product prevents heat from escaping. Window insulation values are represented by U-value. U-values generally fall between 0.20 for high performance insulated glass to 1.80 for single pane glass. The lower the U-value, the greater a window’s resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating value.

Polycarbonate vs. Acrylic

Multi-wall polycarbonate sheets are known by these manufacturer or trade names: Polygal, Palram, Sunlite®, Lexan®, Makrolon®, Merlon®, Makrolux®, and Marlon among others. Polycarbonate sheets are used extensively around the world in greenhouses, roof glazing and daylighting applications.

The importance of polycarbonate’s high strength and impact resistance can not be understated when considering snow capability, flexibility under load or falling items that can impact the sheet like hail, sliding snow and ice.

Polycarbonate is also used in high strength applications such as eye wear, bullet proof glass, headlamp lenses and industrial glazing. In all of these applications, Polycarbonate sheets use a protective layer to prevent UV damage and ensure a long lasting installation without any discolouration. Multi-wall acrylic sheets are known by these manufacturer or trade names: Acrylite®, Cyro, Lucite®, Deglas®, and Plexiglas®,among others.

While known for its optical clarity, clear acrylic sheets (or polycarbonate for that matter) are not a good choice for sunrooms or other low slope applications like patio covers. Clear sheets let in too much heat and glare. Debris on a low slope roof with any type of glazing is less likely to be washed away by rain and is more visible with clear sheets.

Wise consumers will choose an opaque or otherwise tinted roof sheet with light and UV filtering characteristics and especially for sunrooms, a solar reflective option. Both polycarbonate and acrylic manufacturers produce sheets with these characteristics. Acrylic sheets are more economical than polycarbonate, more brittle and more flammable.

A Proper Structural Design

  • Skyview’s 4” high ‘I’ Beam Design. Never spaced more than 24” apart. Fully tested.

  • Snap Caps that hold down the glazing are not considered as a structural component.

  • Thermal break to reduce the chance of frost or condensation. Especially import for enclosed sunrooms.

Will It Hold The Snow?

  • This manufacturer says that extra capacity is gained by putting screws through the snap cap. But it’s a shape that will spread out under pressure. The cap can’t possibly stiffen the assembly in the presence of flexible ribbed rubber gaskets and a plastic glazing sheet.

  • An upside down ‘T’ bar is not a structural shape. The shape pictured is only 3” high. When designing the Skyview roof system, our designers ruled out the ‘T’ bar design as not having the capacity required to comply with building codes for common spans in most Canadian cities.

  • There is a thermal break cavity, but it is not used in this sample.

Glazing Sheets That Lock Together

Our Northlander™ Skyview Quick Cover system is easy to install. The ⅝″ thick (16mm) glazing sheets are four feet wide. Sheets are joined together with a  polycarbonate base rail and cap, typically clear in colour. The cap snaps down over the base which hides the screws, provides a clean flush appearance and a water resistant seam. It mounts on existing aluminum, steel, or wood frame work. It is great for re-glazing solariums and conservatories

If your joists are spaced 24 inches apart, you may be able to install the aluminum base rails directly on to them. Often you will run horizontal strapping (purlins) spaced 24″ to 36” apart. Refer to manufacturers load table for purlin spacing, available on installation tab.

DIY’ers can purchase the Skyview Quick Canopy by component. For approx. price, please see pricing tab.

Applications for the Skyview Quick Canopy System

  • Re-roof your gazebo or backyard pavilion.
  • Get more use from your pergola by giving it a clear water resistant cover.
  • Wall and roof glazing for your greenhouse.
  • Replace single glazed warehouse windows and industrial windows.
  • Stylish carport cover.
  • A patio cover that keeps you dry and keeps out the heat.
  • Roof for a pool enclosure.
  • Walls and roof glazing for bus shelters and smoking enclosures.
  • Wind break.

What Levels of Transparency are Available for my Canopy?

Chooose the level of transparency that’s right for you. Clear polycarnonate allows the most light to pass, then Bronze and finally Opal Ice. Our Bronze tint glazing sheets are very popular for patio covers. In any case, all sheets feature the same special UV Absorption and Protection Layer, which provides long-lasting high stability against damaging UV radiation.
